About megabytes and gigabytes
Megabyte (MB)
A decimal megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes (1,000 kB). It is used for file sizes and download quotas.
Gigabyte (GB)
A decimal gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes (1,000 MB). It is used for storage capacity of drives and phones and for data plans.
Both are units of digital information; the base unit used internally is bit.
Notes
- Decimal: 1 kB = 1000 bytes, 1 MB = 1000 kB, 1 GB = 1000 MB. Binary: 1 KiB = 1024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1024 KiB, 1 GiB = 1024 MiB.
- 1 TB = 1000 GB = 10¹² bytes and 1 TiB = 1024 GiB = 2⁴⁰ bytes (1,099,511,627,776 bytes).
- 1 byte = 8 bits. Data rates are not yet included. Quantities cannot be negative.
MB to GB FAQs
How do I convert megabytes to gigabytes?
Multiply the number of megabytes by 0.001 (equivalently, divide by 1000) to get gigabytes. For example, 25 MB × 0.001 = 0.025 GB.
How many gigabytes are in one megabyte?
1 MB = 0.001 GB and 1 GB = 1000 MB. To go the other way, use the gigabytes to megabytes converter.
How many gigabytes are in 1000 megabytes?
1000 MB = 1 GB, rounded to 6 significant digits. Change the value in the converter above for any other amount.
How many gigabytes are in 1024 megabytes?
1024 MB = 1.024 GB, rounded to 6 significant digits.
What is the difference between megabytes and gigabytes?
A decimal megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes (1,000 kB). It is used for file sizes and download quotas. A decimal gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes (1,000 MB). It is used for storage capacity of drives and phones and for data plans.
What is the difference between decimal (GB) and binary (GiB) units?
Decimal units (kB, MB, GB, TB) count in powers of 1,000 and binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) count in powers of 1,024. For example 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes but 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. Here MB is decimal (powers of 1,000) and GB is decimal (powers of 1,000).
