About kibibytes and bytes

Kibibyte (KiB)

A kibibyte is 1,024 bytes (2^10), the IEC binary unit. It is used where memory sizes are powers of two.

Byte (B)

A byte is 8 bits. It is the basic unit of file sizes and memory.

Both are units of digital information; the base unit used internally is bit.

KiB to B FAQs

How do I convert kibibytes to bytes?

Multiply the number of kibibytes by 1024 to get bytes. For example, 25 KiB × 1024 = 25600 B.

How many bytes are in one kibibyte?

1 KiB = 1024 B and 1 B = 0.0009765625 KiB. To go the other way, use the bytes to kibibytes converter.

How many bytes are in 64 kibibytes?

64 KiB = 65536 B, rounded to 6 significant digits. Change the value in the converter above for any other amount.

How many bytes are in 18432 kibibytes?

18432 KiB = 18874400 B, rounded to 6 significant digits.

Is the KiB to B conversion exact?

Yes. The factor 1024 follows directly from the unit definitions (A kibibyte is 1,024 bytes (2^10), the IEC binary unit; a byte is 8 bits), so the only rounding is in the digits you choose to display.

What is the difference between kibibytes and bytes?

A kibibyte is 1,024 bytes (2^10), the IEC binary unit. It is used where memory sizes are powers of two. A byte is 8 bits. It is the basic unit of file sizes and memory.

What is the difference between decimal (GB) and binary (GiB) units?

Decimal units (kB, MB, GB, TB) count in powers of 1,000 and binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) count in powers of 1,024. For example 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes but 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. Here KiB is binary (powers of 1,024) and B is a base unit.
