About gigabytes and terabytes
Gigabyte (GB)
A decimal gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes (1,000 MB). It is used for storage capacity of drives and phones and for data plans.
Terabyte (TB)
A decimal terabyte is 10^12 bytes (1,000 GB). It is used for hard drives, SSDs and cloud storage.
Both are units of digital information; the base unit used internally is bit.
Notes
- Decimal: 1 kB = 1000 bytes, 1 MB = 1000 kB, 1 GB = 1000 MB. Binary: 1 KiB = 1024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1024 KiB, 1 GiB = 1024 MiB.
- 1 TB = 1000 GB = 10¹² bytes and 1 TiB = 1024 GiB = 2⁴⁰ bytes (1,099,511,627,776 bytes).
- 1 byte = 8 bits. Data rates are not yet included. Quantities cannot be negative.
GB to TB FAQs
How do I convert gigabytes to terabytes?
Multiply the number of gigabytes by 0.001 (equivalently, divide by 1000) to get terabytes. For example, 25 GB × 0.001 = 0.025 TB.
How many terabytes are in one gigabyte?
1 GB = 0.001 TB and 1 TB = 1000 GB. To go the other way, use the terabytes to gigabytes converter.
How many terabytes are in 1000 gigabytes?
1000 GB = 1 TB, rounded to 6 significant digits. Change the value in the converter above for any other amount.
How many terabytes are in 1024 gigabytes?
1024 GB = 1.024 TB, rounded to 6 significant digits.
What is the difference between gigabytes and terabytes?
A decimal gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes (1,000 MB). It is used for storage capacity of drives and phones and for data plans. A decimal terabyte is 10^12 bytes (1,000 GB). It is used for hard drives, SSDs and cloud storage.
What is the difference between decimal (GB) and binary (GiB) units?
Decimal units (kB, MB, GB, TB) count in powers of 1,000 and binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) count in powers of 1,024. For example 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes but 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. Here GB is decimal (powers of 1,000) and TB is decimal (powers of 1,000).
